Prerequisites for Marilyn’s Class
This workshop is for accomplished photographers, who have a sound technical background in camera technique and computer skills.
You are expected to have a good technical background of photographing with your digital SLR camera and using your own laptop/desktop computers to review, edit, save and store your images safety.
Although this is not an advanced Photoshop workshop, a good familiarity with your computer, computer literacy, navigation, mouse skills and digital workflow is essential.
You will need to have the most current version of Photoshop and Corel Painter.
(There are 30-day trial versions of Photoshop and Painter which may be downloaded before you arrive at NSI). Your instructor will help you with the download if need be. Your instructor will contact you by email to let you know if there are any other specific software requirements for your course.
THE INSTRUCTORS ARE NOT EXPECTED TO GIVE CONSIDERATION TO THOSE STUDENTS WHOSE LEVEL OF COMPENTENCY IS FAR BELOW THE COURSE DESCRIPTION OR OTHER PHOTOGRAPHERS LEVEL IN THE CLASS.
Course Requirements
- Comfortable knowledge of Corel Painter 11 and Photoshop CS2 or higher
- Wacom TABLET any model but recommend Intuous 4 6x8 size.
- A wireless mouse will make your life easier and less cords around you.
- An extra drive or usb key for at least 4 gigs to back up your work and also pass to instructor for slide shows and printing.
Required Knowledge of Corel Painter
- How to load brushes http://www.digitalpaintingforum.com/movies/installbrushes.mp4 either using the Studio Chris Brush Manager or by manually installing.
- How to organize your workspace so a workspace is set up for the NSI course.
- How to save your Palette layout. How to create Custom Palettes and export them.
- How to add a layer and duplicate a layer.
- Where the composite modes are and how to use opacity with them.
- How to use the Autopainting feature in Painter. How to both use Clone painting and Quick Clone painting.
Required Knowledge of Photoshop
- How to resize and crop your photos in Photoshop so they are all the same size and resolution.
- How to use Hue and Saturation.
- How to install Plugins we will download during the workshop.
Student Equipment Requirements
You will need Corel Painter 11 installed with all the appropriate updates to the software. Photoshop CS or higher should be installed.. Before class you will be sent a list of both plug ins and stand alone programs you must install a few days before arriving at NSI. The reason to install only a few days before is that most of them have demos that are good for 14 to 30 days so we want your software to all be current.
You are required to have this software loaded and working on your computer before you come to class!
A Wacom tablet is a must! Ideally, an INTUOUS3 or 4 tablet 6x8 is what is what I recommend for class. Anything less than that will not give you the complete detail control you need for digital art painting. If you have a Graphire, it is not as pressure sensitive and does not have the options for designating the buttons for actions. We will be setting up everyones tablets in class to begin the course. Laptop or desktop computer with at least 500 megs RAM.
Make sure that you have a clean hard drive and enough room to store data for class assignments.
A portable jump drive would be a good idea to move your class assignments to it and also back up and save brushes and palettes.
Marilyn will send an email before class that will suggest the types of images you should bring to work on in class. Initially, for the lessons, everyone will work on a few of the same images Marilyn will bring and after that it is your choice to paint your own. There will be a complete selection of images provided for those that prefer not to work on their own.
Do NOT bring to class work you are attempting to finish in the workshop that is for a specific client. You may never get to finish it. Take what you learn during the week and apply it to your paintings for your clients.
Lastly, two most important things to bring:
Your IMAGINATION and SENSE OF HUMOR!!
Marilyn’s classes are known to be fun and move quickly keeping everyone up to speed together and no one gets left behind.
